
TSUULL Talks Program: Women in Modern Japan: A Journey Through Time – Public-Talk by Anna Pak, 11 October 2024
TSUULL University contributes to the UN SDG through its teaching and community projects. TSUULL Public Talks is a part of the University's efforts to contribute knowledge, thought-leadership and innovative ideas to the region.
The Program showcases dynamic speakers through a number of community-focused talks across a range of disciplines, encouraging debates on SDG issues like mental health, gender equality, poverty, peace justice and strong institutions etc. This is a chance to hear first-hand from world-leading researchers and subject-matter experts speaking on topics that affect us all.

Speaker: Anna Pak is а specialist in Japanese art. Graduated from the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH), completed professional development courses at the University of California, Los Angeles (USA), and studied Japanese cursive writing at the University of Cambridge (UK) and The University of Chicago (USA). Worked as a curator of the East Asian painting and graphic art collection at the State Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow and collaborated with the Multimedia Art Museum on exhibition projects. She was also the curator of the "Art of Manga" exhibition.
Anna is the author of books on Japanese culture and art, and a guest speaker on educational programs on television and radio. She has lectured and presented at various institutions, including the State Museum of Oriental Art, the Moscow Kremlin Museums, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, MAMM, the Museum für Asiatische Kunst in Berlin, the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum, the International Congress of Art History in Beijing (Peking University), the University of Zurich (Universität Zürich), and Ruhr University Bochum (Ruhr-Universität Bochum).
In this lecture, we will look at how the role of women in Japan has changed over time, from traditional society to modern challenges. Traditionally, women were expected to focus on family and household duties, with limited roles outside the home. We’ll explore the cultural and historical factors that have influenced the status of women in Japan today, and discuss where Japan stands in terms of gender equality.
