TSUULL Public-Talks Program: Why is it better to use old buildings than to build new ones? – Public Talk by Lyubov Efremova, 1 November 2024

TSUULL University contributes to the UN SDG through its teaching and community projects. TSUULL Public Talks is a part of the University's efforts to contribute knowledge, thought leadership, and innovative ideas to the region.

The Program showcases dynamic speakers through several community-focused talks across various disciplines, encouraging debates on SDG issues like mental health, gender equality, poverty, peace justice, and strong institutions. This is a chance to hear from world-leading researchers and subject-matter experts speaking on topics that affect us all.

Speaker: Lyubov Efremova – Architect of public buildings and structures. Graduated from the Master's program of the St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in urban planning, and the Bachelor's program of the Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in architectural design. Leading architect of one of the leading architectural studios in St. Petersburg, Evgeny Gerasimov and Partners. Designed a large public and business ensemble of St. Petersburg, Nevskaya Ratusha. Participated in the restoration and reconstruction of UNESCO sites such as New Holland (St. Petersburg), Stieglitz Mansion (St. Petersburg), Monplaisir Palace (Peterhof). Participated in the creation of a digital twin of the destroyed building of the Tverskoy River Station for subsequent restoration. Author of articles on the interaction of the urban environment and industrial architecture.
Objectives: In this lecture, we will look at why it is worth paying attention to existing buildings and using them, changing their functions, adapting them to the modern needs of the city and society, and why such a strategy is better than simply constructing new buildings. The topic touches on such UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable (Goal 11); Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns (Goal 12); Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all (Goal 8).
