TSUULL Advances the Third Mission of Universities: Commitment to Social and Economic Development, 13-14 May

The Group of Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE), an initiative spearheaded by the European Union, convened a two-day seminar on May 13-14, 2024, at 'Silk Road' University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage in the historic city of Samarkand. The theme of the seminar, "The Third Mission of Universities: Cooperation for Social and Economic Development," brought together a diverse array of experts, including Prof., Dr. Nozliya Normurodova, TSUULL vice-rector for international cooperation.

The two-day seminar served as a forum for deep and nuanced discussions on the evolving role of universities in contemporary society. Referred to as the 'third mission,' universities are increasingly called upon to extend their influence beyond traditional academic boundaries and actively engage with pressing social and economic challenges. These challenges, ranging from the evolving needs of the labor market to the imperative of addressing climate change and transitioning to a carbon-free economy, underscore the dynamic and multifaceted landscape within which universities operate.

Throughout the seminar, participants delved into key strategies aimed at enhancing universities' societal impact. Discussions revolved around the importance of interdisciplinary research, continuous learning initiatives, and the promotion of open access to education and research. Notably, universities across Europe and neighboring regions have embraced strategic partnerships with businesses and civil society organizations to collectively address these challenges. The imperative for universities to demonstrate their relevance and impact in society has led to the adoption of innovative approaches and transformative strategies in education and research.

Speaking at the seminar, the representative from TSUULL, Prof., Dr. Nozliya Normurodova, highlighted the university's steadfast commitment to addressing global challenges and fostering social responsibility. Strategies to maximize the university's impact through educational innovation, digitization, and information continuity were underscored as critical pathways for driving societal change and progress. TSUULL has consistently been at the forefront of addressing social issues and promoting gender equality. This commitment to societal engagement and global well-being has earned the university recognition in THE Impact Ranking as one of the world's top institutions. By embracing the third mission of universities and actively contributing to social and economic development, TSUULL exemplifies its dedication to advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and shaping a better future for all.
