Guest Lecture ‘Compost is the most! Digging deep into black gold magic’
Area: Sustainable Communities, Circular Economy, Grassroots science, Waste Management, Composting
A series of short presentations delivered, organized and hosted by TSUULL University and made accessible for all. These public-talks enhance skills related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, while fostering the involvement of institutions of higher education as valuable stakeholders to achieve the Goals.
Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12 or Global Goal 12), titled ‘responsible consumption and production’, is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2015. The official wording of SDG 12 is ‘Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns’ which calls for a comprehensive set of actions from businesses, policy-makers, researchers and consumers to adapt to sustainable practices.
Imagine taking materials that many people view as garbage and transforming them into something extremely beautiful and useful. Hand by hand with nature creating something that marvelously improves soil quality. Something that has the ability to bind heavy metals and toxic compounds in contaminated areas. Something that reduces needs for fertilizers and pesticides. Something that finishes the natural cycle of life by returning essential nutrients back to the soil to start it all over again.
Imagine that one simple process could benefit the whole world around you, positively affecting larger environmental issues. One personal decision to decrease the amount of food scraps you send to the landfills, will be followed by the chain of eco-positive events: less methane will be synthesized and released into the atmosphere, less heat will be trapped there, less greenhouse-gas impacts! – You win, your soil wins and the planet wins! Win-win-win situation! And all this is possible from the moment you decide to put your banana peel to the compost.

During this lecture we will dig deep into the world of composting and slowly fall in love with this amazing technique. We will learn the science behind the process and get familiar with the whole micro-universe of organisms responsible for ‘the black gold’ magic. We will look at different types of compost, so no matter where you live: in your own house with a garden or in a small city apartment, you will definitely find something that will suit your soul and your powers. We will analyze the main practical mistakes and relax by inventing dozens of ways to use the resulting magnificent compost. Finally, we will think about the role of composting in a sustainable community and answer the question ‘Is it just some rotting stuff in the backyard or a revolutionary act against consumer-driven society?’ Digging deep!
