“Choose Life, Not HIV”: Students Raise Awareness at Tashkent University

On September 20, 2025, first-year students of the English department at Alisher Navoiy Tashkent State University of Uzbek Language and Literature participated in a large-scale educational and awareness event titled “Choose Life, Not HIV.” The initiative was organized jointly by the university’s doctors, tutors, and faculty members.

The main goal of the event was to strengthen young people’s understanding of healthy lifestyles, raise awareness about global threats such as HIV, and encourage vigilance and responsible behavior. Speakers emphasized that HIV is not just a medical issue but a social problem affecting society as a whole. Experts explained the causes of the disease, its severe consequences for human health, and the role of preventive measures. Special attention was given to promoting a healthy lifestyle among youth, giving up harmful habits, and fostering social responsibility.

Participants also learned about international programs combating HIV as well as preventive initiatives implemented by the government of Uzbekistan. Several state programs and campaigns aimed at protecting youth health and promoting healthy living were presented as examples of successful efforts.

Students actively engaged in the discussion, asking questions and reflecting on real-life examples, which helped deepen their understanding of the topic. Experts stressed that fighting HIV is not only the responsibility of healthcare professionals but a social duty of every citizen. The event played a significant role in broadening young people’s perspectives, reinforcing their sense of responsibility, and encouraging them to take an active role in society. Such initiatives raise awareness and guide youth toward informed and healthy life choices.
