Alisher Navo’i Tashkent State University of Uzbek Language and Literature's ‘Uzbek School’ Educational Project is offering a unique Summer School Program to cater to the growing global interest in the Uzbek language. This program is designed for students, scholars, international investors, employees of global organizations and anyone interested in learning about Uzbek Culture and Language.

The Uzbek School Summer Program is more than just a language course – it is a cultural gateway. It promises an enriching educational experience with a blend of traditional and digital learning methods under the guidance of expert professionals. The Program not only aims to meet the current demand for Uzbek language proficiency but also to foster international appreciation and cultural exchange.

The Program that travels back in time to explore the ancient trade route that once linked the East and West. Known as the Silk Route, this path was crucial in the development of human civilization, fostering unity and the exchange of cultural values. Stretching from the Roman Empire to the ancient Japanese capital of Nara, this route not only carried silk but later facilitated the trade of tea, horses, camels, medicinal herbs, jewelry, porcelain, silver and ivory goods. Named the ‘Great Silk Road’ by German scholar Ferdinand von Richthofen in 1877, it remains a testament to historical connectivity.

The Uzbek School Summer Program is an immersive experience that lasts three weeks and is set in the culturally rich and historic environment of Uzbekistan. It consists of:

  • - Language Education: Daily language classes for a total of two hours utilizing modern pedagogical methods and covering levels A1 to C1. These classes aim to provide a comprehensive foundation in the Uzbek language for speakers of various linguistic backgrounds;
  • - Cultural Immersion: The remaining two hours each day are dedicated to Uzbek Culture, including public-talks and specialised training sessions on the Silk Road, Sufi Teachings, the Renaissance of the East, Timurid Culture and the Jadidism Period;
  • - Skill Workshops: Hands-on workshops on Uzbek Applied Arts, Traditional Clothing, Central Asian Cuisine, Folklore, Dancing and Customs allowing participants to gain practical skills and a deeper understanding of the Uzbek way of life;
  • - Educational Resources: High-quality Uzbek Language Text/Workbooks with guidelines in multiple languages and free online courses complemented by audio-visual materials with QR-code distributed via social media tools;
  • - Expected Outcomes: Participants of the Uzbek School Summer Program will:
  •   Gain a comprehensive understanding of the Uzbek language.
  •   Enhance their knowledge of Uzbek culture, arts, and traditions.
  •   Experience personal growth through cultural exchange and language acquisition.
  •   Have access to a wide range of educational materials for on-going learning.

This journey through history will delve into the monumental significance of the Timurid Empire in Uzbek history. During the studies, participants will uncover the reforms, literary achievements, cultural and economic innovations of this era with a special showcase of rare manuscript books from the Timurid period. The cultural hubs of Samarkand, Shahrisabz and Tashkent will provide the backdrop as we build a global perspective on the Timurid legacy. Participants will also gain in-depth knowledge about Alisher Navoiy's contributions under the Timurid dynasty, a period that marks a distinct era in Uzbek literature.

Summer School will provide insights into one of the essential elements of classical Uzbek literature – Sufi Teachings, their role in the Eastern Renaissance and their significance. We will explore the essence of Sufism, highlighting that Sufism included not only male ascetics but also female saints drawing upon examples such as the 33 Sufi women mentioned in Alisher Navoiy’s work ‘Nasoyim ul-muhabbat’ to illustrate their place in the history of Islamic law. Then we will turn our attention to the Jadid movement, a pivotal force in the political life of Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan (then Turkestan), at the turn of the 20th century. The Program will present the specific conceptual goals of this movement, and the scientific and literary legacy they left behind. We will also examine why the Jadid leaders advocated for the youth to study in Turkey and Germany and discuss the poignant fates that befell the enlightened young upon their return to their homeland, all through the lens of historical sources. TSUULL Summer school is a gateway to the past, offering a tapestry of learning experiences that illuminate the rich cultural heritage and historical narratives of Uzbekistan.
